Cellular Matrix® for Knee Osteoarthritis

Break the Vicious Cycle of Joint Degeneration with RegenPRP® + Hyaluronic Acid

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive joint disease caused by the breakdown of cartilage, inflammation, and altered joint biomechanics. Conventional treatments often focus on reducing symptoms but fail to address the biological causes of joint degeneration. Cellular Matrix® (CM-PRP-HA) by RegenLab introduces a powerful regenerative treatment that combines Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) with Hyaluronic Acid (HA)—two proven modalities that work synergistically to relieve pain, restore joint function, and potentially delay surgery .

What Is Cellular Matrix?

Cellular Matrix® is an advanced, CE-certified medical device system designed for the closed-circuit preparation of autologous PRP and non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid (HA) in a single procedure. It’s a breakthrough treatment platform developed by RegenLab that combines:

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (RegenPRP®): A concentrated portion of your own blood containing platelets, growth factors, and plasma proteins involved in tissue repair and anti-inflammatory activity.
  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA): A natural component of synovial fluid responsible for joint lubrication, shock absorption, and cartilage support.

Together, these two biologics enhance each other’s effects to create a joint-friendly, bioactive scaffold that stimulates healing while improving joint mobility and reducing pain

Cellular Matrix

How Does it Work?

The Cellular Matrix system prepares a mixture of ~3 mL PRP and 2 mL HA from a 6 mL blood sample, producing a final injectable volume of around 5 mL in a single closed sterile process.

Key biological mechanisms:

  • HA provides viscosity and lubrication, restoring the joint’s ability to glide smoothly.
  • PRP releases growth factors (PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, IGF) that stimulate cartilage repair, reduce inflammation, and attract stem cells.
  • When combined, PRP and HA form a cell-friendly extracellular matrix that enhances growth factor activity and modulates the catabolic environment of osteoarthritic joints.

This results in:

  • Decreased inflammation and joint stiffness
  • Regeneration of damaged cartilage tissue
  • Improved joint hydration and biomechanical function
  • Longer-lasting symptom relief than either PRP or HA alone

Clinical Advantages

🔬 Scientifically Proven Synergy

  • HA alone improves joint lubrication and delays cartilage degeneration.
  • PRP alone supports cell migration, proliferation, and anti-inflammatory signaling.
  • Combined, they offer a dual-action approach—HA forms a matrix that prolongs PRP release and enhances its biological activity

Results and Evidence

✅ Pain Reduction & Functional Recovery

A multicenter French study on 77 patients (83 knees) with moderate to severe OA (Kellgren-Lawrence grades II–III) showed that:

  • 83.6% of patients had a successful clinical response to CM-PRP-HA after failing HA alone
  • Significant reduction in pain (WOMAC A1 score) over a 9-month period (Day 0 → Day 270)
  • Over 80% of patients avoided knee surgery for at least 4 years

✅ Sustained Long-Term Outcomes

Another trial comparing CM-PRP-HA to two HA-only formulations found:

  • Statistically significant improvement in WOMAC, VAS, KOOS, and IKDC scores over 12 months
  • Greater increase in cartilage thickness
  • Superior results from the Cellular Matrix group at all checkpoints (2, 6, and 12 months)

What to Expect During Treatment

🧪 Step-by-Step Process

  1. Blood Collection

A small blood sample (~6 mL) is drawn from your arm.

  2. Centrifugation

The Cellular Matrix tube is spun to separate PRP from red and white blood cells.

  3. Homogenisation with HA

The PRP is automatically mixed with 2 mL of non-crosslinked HA.

  4. Injection

The prepared CM-PRP-HA solution is injected intra-articularly into the knee under sterile conditions, often with ultrasound guidance.

  5. Post-Treatment

Resume normal activities within 24–48 hours. Some patients may feel mild joint soreness that resolves quickly.

A typical course includes 3 injections spaced 2–3 weeks apart, although your physician may tailor the schedule to your condition.

Clinical Study: Cellular Matrix® – A Safe, Fast, and Novel Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis

Study Overview

A prospective randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Cellular Matrix PRP-HA (CM-PRP-HA) compared to two different types of hyaluronic acid (HA) injections.

Participants:

  • 53 patients (90 knees)
  • Age range: 39–80 years
  • Diagnosed with Kellgren-Lawrence Grade I–III knee osteoarthritis

💉 Treatment Groups

The clinical study divided participants into three groups, each receiving a different treatment protocol:

  • The CM-PRP-HA group included 19 patients (30 knees) who received three injections of a combined solution consisting of 3 mL platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and 2 mL hyaluronic acid (HA). These injections were administered every 15 days.
  • The AV group consisted of 19 patients (30 knees) who received weekly injections of 2 mL non-crosslinked sodium hyaluronate (HA) for a total duration of three weeks.
  • The OP group included 15 patients (30 knees), who were treated with weekly injections of 2 mL HA combined with mannitol, also administered over the course of three weeks.

📈 Results Summary

Pain and function were assessed using the following validated tools:

  • VAS (Visual Analogue Scale)
  • WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index)
  • KOOS (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score)
  • IKDC (International Knee Documentation Committee)

✅ Key Outcomes

All groups experienced statistically significant improvement in pain and function at 2, 6, and 12 months post-treatment.

The CM-PRP-HA group showed superior results compared to both HA-only groups:

  • Significantly better improvement at 2 months
  • Highly significant improvements at 6 and 12 months (p < 0.01)
  • MRI evaluation showed statistically significant cartilage thickness improvement at:
  • 2 and 6 months (lateral compartment, p < 0.05)
  • 12 months (medial compartment, p < 0.01)
Results:

The Cellular Matrix PRP-HA combination produced longer-lasting and more sustained clinical improvements than hyaluronic acid alone.
This combination therapy may serve as a valuable option to postpone or avoid knee arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery).
